How to Tell If Retargeting Is Failing Due to Click Fraud

27.06.2025 1

Retargeting should be your best-performing ad type — it targets warm leads. But fraud can slip in, especially if you don’t cleanse your audiences.

How fraud enters retargeting:

  • bots trigger session logs and enter your audience lists;
  • platforms assume they're real visitors;
  • ads serve to “dead” IDs or devices;
  • you get clicks, no conversions — budget wasted.

Signs of retargeting fraud:

  • conversions drop while CTR stays high;
  • repeat clicks from one IP;
  • no interaction after ad click;
  • audiences never refresh, show same IDs;
  • ultra-short sessions (< 3 sec).

What to do:

  1. Use AntiClick to clean your retargeting lists.
  2. Exclude devices/IPs with no engagement.
  3. Set stricter audience filters: min. 2 pages, 10+ sec.
  4. Avoid injecting bots into your lookalikes.
